On the ground and in the sun

Getting off the plane was a shock--hot and sunny, but all went smoothly and Sam was waiting for us, along with Mr. Cosmas Lubega. They had a great little sign that said, "Steve TPC". Sam was all smiles and said that he was glad we were finally here (we all agree that we've never seen him smile that much!).

We went in two cars: Cosmas' car and a taxi. It was a wonderful drive with so many new sights and smells. We hardly knew which was to look first. The flowers are beautiful! There are huge trees with beautiful purple blooms--i have to find out what they are! We passed all kinds of houses and businesses. It rained while we were in the car but stopped before long. The rules of the road were...interesting, Steve noted, with no need for markings on the road (you can drive on either side of the road, after all).

We arrived at the Namiremba Guest House and checked in. We're in room number one!

The room is lovely with four beds and an adjoining bathroom. There are mosquito nets over the beds which we will tuck in around our mattress when we go to bed. Since there has been rain the last four days, there are more mosquitos (but only Steve has actually seen one) but the rain was needed.

There are preparations underway in the courtyard for a wedding today. It will be interesting to see it this afternoon. If we have time after lunch and a nap, that is!

Katie (my roommate) put it this way: "You can drive without a license, you can drive without insurance, but you can't drive without a horn!"

How do you say Beep-Beep in Ugandan?

Glad you are on the ground.

It is minus 17 degrees here - as I look out on to the frozen Credit River. Amazing to think that we are sharing the rays of the same sun!

So glad to see that you've arrived safely. Best wishes to you all from Vicki in Vancouver. I'm looking forward to reading more of your posts in the amazing days ahead.

If only we could share a little of the Vancouver rain with the folks there and they a little of the sun with us. But we did see a watery sun today, and a few snowdrops poking out of the ground.
